With miles of soft white sand and clear turquoise waters, Zanzibar is a tropical idyll where days can be lost to its laid-back island rhythm. But don’t think you are the first to fall for its exotic charms: prevailing trade winds have brought travelers to the exotic Zanzibar Archipelago for a thousand years and more. Step away from the sun-stroked beaches and evidence of its vanished past and melting pot of cultures is clear. It is this rich heritage that sets Zanzibar apart as a fascinating destination.
The archipelago is made up of over 50 palm-fringed islands and islets, some hardly more than white sandbars or coral reefs. The four main islands – Unguja (also known as Zanzibar), Pemba and Mafia Island – are inhabited, while uninhabited Latham Island is an important breeding ground for birds.
The archipelago protrudes from the Indian Ocean: underwater, world-famous coral reefs teem with marine life. The warm water is usually so clear that visibility is often 30 meters or more – no wonder that Zanzibar’s islands are a Mecca for snorkelers and divers.
Whether you are looking for beachside bling or just the simple serenity of a hammock strung beneath the coconut palms, there are plenty of options. Accommodation offerings on the islands range from basic backpacker to simple, secluded elegance to knock-your-socks-off ritzy resorts.
Every pain avoided. But in certain circumstances and owing to the claims of duty or the obligation of business it will frequently occur that pleasures have to be repudiated and accepted. The therefore always holds in these matters this principle one rejects dislikes or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure but because those who do not know how.
Mafia Island Marine Park
Mafia’s secluded sandbars, migrating whale’s sharks, nesting turtles and lais back vibe make this island simply magic. While Zanzibar is probably the most popular Island in East Africa, this small archipelago around Mafia Island, just 160 km to its South, remains virtually unknown. Yet for simple ocean pleasures, Mafia has long been the connoisseur’s choice for genuinely laid-back, feet in the sand island chilling.
Mafia is well known as a world-class diving destination with some of the richest reefs in the world. The park covers the Southern part of Mafia Island and includes the inhabited islands of Chole, Juani Jibondo and Bwejuu and several uninhabited islets and the associated waters.
Two species of sea turtle use Mafia’s beaches as nesting grounds and the area has been recognized internationally as a critical site for biodiversity. Several sites of historic ruins lie within the marine park area, some dating back to the C 13th. Mafia Island’s separation from the mainland and its freedom from industrial development have ensured that its surrounding waters are some of the least contaminated in Tanzania. The marine park area has national importance as one of the few remaining reef complexes within Tanzania’s coastal waters in relatively intact condition.
